School-level Rakan Muda clubs next year

KUALA LUMPUR: Rakan Muda clubs will be set up in secondary schools next year to allow students to participate in more recreational pursuits.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the joint effort between the ministry and the Education Ministry would encourage youths to be active.
The ministries have also formed a committee to improve the quality of sports such as hockey in schools and at districts.
Speaking after giving away prizes to winners of the Kid Witness News National Contest here, Ismail Sabri said Malaysia did not perform well in hockey because the players practised on grass while international tournaments were held on artificial turf.
“However, to have astroturf (a brand of synthetic turf) fields in every state is not practical.
“I believe we need to develop the sport in schools by having more competitions and leagues,” he said.
On the RM600,000 debt owed by the Perlis Football Association to the Employees Provident Fund, he said it was the association‘s responsibility to settle its financial woes.
“These are risks that have to be taken by the president and he should be willing to make sacrifices to solve the problem,” he said, adding that the ministry does not extend help to any association as it would increase its burden.
“Our focus at the ministry is to develop programmes to elevate the quality of sports,” he stressed.

Rakan Muda is a youth movement under the purview of the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports. Since its inception, it has been actively promoting various sports to the youth. When I was in primary school, I signed up for it but never got an answer from them. Many years later, I found out that they sent me a letter confirming my membership but the letter was kept by my Mum without showing it to me. -_-
Melbourne Shuffle on the other hand is a dance which originates from the clubs Melbourne. During its early years, it's a dance associates with all night long clubbing and drugs. Clubbers will pop couple of 'Speed' so that they can shuffle all night long. When it first started in Malaysia, it's a dance heavily associated with clubbing and drugs. It doesn't even have a name - we just call it the Melbourne Underground. Further, google search at that time didn't even yield a single relevant result.
But this dance has evolved dramatically in Malaysia. It has gone mainstream with kids below the age of 15 shuffling to hardstyle music. For the older generation, Hardstyle music is something like fengtau.
And the link between Rakan Muda and Melbourne?

taking it glokal

Rakan Muda Team Malaysia is a innovative youth-driven program, introduced to Malaysia in October of 1998, that is dedicated to educating young Malaysians about the world of international business and trade. This international training program accomplishes its objectives by conducting training centres and by leading a mission to one of Malaysia's trading partners, in particular Canada. Rakan Muda Team Malaysia was founded by a not-for-profit Canadian organization called Global Vision. Global Vision was established in 1991 by a group of business, government and education leaders to prepare young Canadians for careers in the changing global marketplace.

KRM-PADANG BESAR: Youth programmes, including Rakan Muda, to be re-evaluated

KRM-PADANG BESAR: Youth programmes, including Rakan Muda, to be re-evaluated

THE RAKAN MUDA VISION

Vision Rakan Muda is "A New Vision for the Youth", a part of the development of Vision 2020, Malaysia's blueprint for social and economic development for the country.
As a physical entity, Rakan Muda is an all-encompassing, innovative Youth Focal Point - the first and biggest of its kind in the country - created to effectively capture the imagination of our youth. To make them purposeful and active contributors in nation building. And to make them dynamic partners in Malaysia's development goals and strategies.
To begin with, 10 lifestyle programmes that have strong youth-appeal were identified and developed. They are:
Rakan Sukan (Sports), Rakan Wajadiri (Martial Arts), Rakan Cinta Alam (The Environment), Rakan Seni Budaya (Culture & Arts), Rakan Rekacipta (Innovations), Rakan Wirausaha dan Wiramahir (Entrepreneurship), Rakan Kecergasan (Physical Fitness), Rakan Masyarakat (Community Service), Rakan Rekreasi (Recreation) and Briged Rakan Muda (Uniformed Corps). These programmes were designed to channel the energies of our young people towards healthy, productive and interesting activities.
A strong visual identity was then developed for Rakan Muda - a logo based on the concept of "Reach for the Stars." The Stars symbolise excellence, success, achievement - positive attributes for young people to follow. A spirited, motivating action line was also devised - "Yakin Boleh!" meaning "Yes, we can!" - as their rallying cry.
This spirited call resounded around the nation for the first time on 29 October 1994, when the Prime Minister, YAB Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, launched Rakan Muda together with one of the lifestyle programmes, Rakan Wajadiri.
Within six months of the launch, over half a million young Malaysians registered to participate in the programme. And the numbers are still growing!

What is Rakan Muda All About?

OUR YOUNG, OUR HOPE.

Malaysia is a young country with a young population.
In fact, out of a total population of 19 million, over 7 million are between the ages of 15-34 years and this trend is anticipated to continue until the turn of the century.
With a keen eye on its economic future and to sustain its social stability, the country is galvanising and moulding young people with the principles and character to carry on the momentum of success.
More so as independent surveys and media reports have brought to light the disturbing news that many young people appear to lack the motivation and drive to be a part of Malaysia's success story. Instead, many were falling victim to the many social ills.
In response to this national concern, a strategic mission for young people was formulated to:
Instill a sense of pride, belonging and confidence
Promote a sense of unity, loyalty and patriotism
Cultivate a thirst for knowledge and the motivation for self-improvement
Inculcate an appreciation for high moral values and positive attitudes
In short, the inculcation of these principles were to instil in our young people a lasting, driving sense of pride, ambition and community spirit. To make them a national resource, the future hope of the nation.

From this, Rakan Muda (or Young Partners) was born.

Youth programmes, including Rakan Muda, to be re-evaluated

KUALA LUMPUR: All major youth programmes, including Rakan Muda, will be evaluated to assess their impact and prevent wastage of funds, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said the ministry had carried out numerous programmes and spent millions, but there was no impact on youths.
“Sometimes we just syiok sendiri (feel good about ourselves). Having a crowd of youths attend a function does not mean it is successful.
“I want a report on the impact of each major programme to see if it is beneficial,” he told reporters after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi launched Youth Day celebrations at Bukit Jalil stadium yesterday.
Ismail Sabri said it was important to take a new approach for youth programmes and get young people involved in the planning of their programmes.
“Young people are more creative so we have to allow them to come up with programmes they like - not what we like. Times have changed. We can’t force them to do things they do not want to,” he added.
Ismail Sabri also announced that from June, the Rakan Muda programme would be expanded to include another element, Rakan Cyber, in keeping with the digital age.
He said the ministry planned to set up youth cyber centres in every district because the Internet and blogs were how youths communicated with each other these days.
To counter negative and skewed blogs , he said, the ministry wanted to create blogs that gave accurate information to the young and allowed them space to debate and discuss issues.
On the Rakan Muda programme, he said so far only 200,000 of the nine million youths in the country were part of the programme and there was a need to engage youths even more.
Ismail Sabri also announced that from June, all registered youth organisations would get a grant of RM3,000 each to carry out their programmes.
He said some 4,000 registered youth organisations with the Registrar of Societies and another 50 registered with the ministry would be eligible for the grant.
In his speech, the Prime Minister applauded the enthusiasm and energy of Malaysian youths, and called on them to strive to be the best in all areas as they were the leaders of tomorrow.
He also gave out achievement awards.
K. Rasa Selvan, 39, who is actively involved in a number of Hindu youth organisations, was named Male Youth Personality while the Female Youth Personality award went to 36-year-old teacher Noor Lina Mohd Yusuf
